WCT offers an autism diagnostic service for children and adults. Assessment is undertaken in a multi-disciplinary way by clinicians who have extensive experience working with people with social and communication difficulties as well as developmental difficulties. Marilyn (Consultant Clinical & Forensic Psychologist) leads the assessment team and has input from Speech and Language and Occupational Therapy (see associates below). WCT also links in with Psychiatry, Family Therapy and Nursing as and when needed.
Assessment and diagnosis of autism is a comprehensive approach (in line with NICE guidelines), and will generally involve the following (though there may be variations depending on individual need and age):
* Initial screening questionnaire
* Full developmental history using the DISCO (Diagnostic Interview of Social Communication Disorders)
* Completion of the ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule)
* Assessment of cognitive functioning and adaptive living skills
* Sensory screening
* Mental health screening
* Assessment of strength and coping repertoire
